DÉCIMO TERCEIRO LIVRO

TENTS AND SAILS

I remember the deck parties on Portuguese gunboats and passenger ships in the Gulf of Guinea, the canvas membrane roofs and the wind breakers of the balustrades under tight laced up canvas, Corb's 1937 Pavilion de Temps Nouveaux and the dotted and hung velarium in Banister Fletcher's Colosseum.

It was out of these that I had designed an amphitheatre in the mountains in my fifth year and then had draw sails on my thesis hotel.

The bank pavilion for a Facim exhibition was made out of pipes and was so devised as to stretch the canvas roof and shed off any improbable rain. It gave a most wonderful brightness to the inside when the sun shone. The long elevations were dominated by the schematic pediments which contained black equilateral triangles — the ends of the cross beam whose purpose was merely to raise the canvas roof.
